Best Overall: Ezelia High Pressure Handheld Shower Head

If you want to go with the convenience of having a handheld shower head, you can’t go wrong with Ezelia. Though the company only makes this single shower head, it’s got a solid design for its price point. The Ezelia handheld shower head hits on all of the key things you’ll need in a good shower head without being overly expensive.

Firstly, let’s talk about installation. Installation on a lot of handheld shower heads can be somewhat tricky depending on how complicated the overall design is and how many parts are included. Some handheld shower heads come with parts already attached, and others will have to be assembled. The Ezelia is one of the handheld shower heads that doesn’t take much time at all to put together. You can generally do it in under ten minutes.

Secondly, the handheld shower head comes with a variety of pretty convenient features that add to your shower enjoyment. The Ezelia has five separate spray settings that can be toggled via the thumb tab on the front of the shower head. These spray settings vary from high to low intensity, making the shower head great for people and pets of all ages. You can also stop the flow of water temporarily using this same tab.

In addition, the base model comes with a 60 inch long hose. Ezelia also offers an 80-inch hose if you need the extra length, but this will require an additional purchase and more setup later.

Overall, it’s a really great yet cheap shower head that isn’t prone to breaking prematurely like many similar plastic models are. For its cost, the value and comfort it provides are on par with a lot of the more expensive models.

  • Spray settings can accommodate people of all ages based of pressure variations
  • Very easy installation process that won’t leave you scratching your head
  • Cheap, yet fairly durable

  • None of the water settings provides the “luxury” feeling that high-end handheld shower heads do, but it IS a fraction of the cost
  • Made primarily with plastic components which are durable, but lower quality than higher end shower heads

Best Luxury Option: High Sierra’s Solid Metal Handheld Shower Head Kit

This High Sierra handheld shower head is yet another great contender from this manufacturer. With over 15 years spent in the industry designing high-efficiency nozzles for agricultural irrigation systems, the company is known for getting the greatest feeling out of water flow.  High Sierra primarily makes fantastic water-efficient lower flow shower heads, and their handheld is no different.

Despite being the shower head with the least water flow on this entire list, the High Sierra features the strongest spray out of all of them. The overall range of gallons per minute ranges from 1.5 to 2.0 GPM depending on your pressure preference. Regardless of your choice, you’ll be saving between 20 and 40 percent on water costs over time due to the reduced flow.

Additionally, the High Sierra handheld shower head is composed of 100% solid metal parts. It isn’t like the cheaper shower heads which use a chrome liner over hard plastic. Everything from the hose to the trickle valve are constructed from pure metal. And speaking of the hose, it’s lined with an eco-friendly silicone tube inside and is also 72 inches in length. One foot longer than your average plastic hose. The handheld unit even has a slip-free grip on its base to ensure you won’t likely drop it.

However, there are two downsides to consider with the High Sierra. Firstly, as this is our luxury option, the cost of the High Sierra is really high compared to cheaper plastic options. Secondly, since the nozzle is highly pressurized, the spray has a fantastic range and feel that’s unlike any other handheld shower head. Due to this, though, it also has a tendency of spreading out in unfamiliar trajectories. Though this wasn’t a problem for me, you may have to consider that if you have a bathroom on the tiny side, or a less than stellar shower curtain setup.

In any case, the High Sierra models never cease to outperform in lower flow situations compared to their competitors. If you want a shower experience unlike anything else and can afford the splurge, the High Sierra handheld won’t disappoint.

  • Three separate metallic colors and flow rates to customize your shower experience
  • Saves up to 40% water compared to other handheld shower heads
  • Large water droplets and pressurized water flow are unlike any other nozzle you’ve tried

  • Far more expensive than cheaper plastic shower heads available
  • Powerful spray can be messy

Most Unique Design: Methven Aio Handheld Shower Head

The third handheld shower head to appear on the list is the Methven Aio series handheld shower head. Methven is one of the oldest shower head manufacturers in the world. The company was started in 1886, and has since provided the world with many great showers and faucets. Through over 100 years of improvements and testing, the New Zealand company has become a dominant force in shower technology.

The Aio series is one of the first shower head series using the Methven patented Aurajet technology. Introduced in 2015, the Aurajet technology uses the wide circular area to provide one of the widest reaching water spreads out of all shower heads today. The Aio series provides a water experience using this technology that essentially operates as a mix between the feel of stream spray and rainfall showers.

Unlike other cheaper brands, the Methven Aio uses high grade polymer as its made component. Though this makes the Aio 100% plastic, it’s far more durable than the cheaper plastics used throughout the low-cost shower heads. In addition, the polymer is much lighter than using metal, so the overall weight of the handheld is noticeably much lesser than that of metal builds in its price range.

However, the Methven is noticeably more expensive than other plastic shower heads. It’s not nearly as expensive as the high end metal ones, and not nearly as cheap as the low end plastic ones. Though, the plastic polymer used in the Methven is of far higher quality than the cheapest shower heads, it’s still a tad on the expensive side in my opinion.

In any case, if you want a unique, fun-to-look-at design that operates as a midway point between rainfall shower and traditional stream shower, then the Methven is a great choice for you.

Best Budget Friendly Option: AquaDance Handheld Shower Head

By far the cheapest handheld shower head on the list, the next is the AquaDance handheld shower head. The AquaDance series is a line produced by Hotel Spa, which is owned by the parent company Interlink Products International, Inc. They’re a company known for many low-cost shower heads and have hundreds of different designs available across all of their venues.

The AquaDance handheld is a great value option for anyone of a tight budget. It features six separate spray settings to vary for any person or pet. Like many handheld shower heads, the front thumb tab is used to change from any of the spray settings with relative ease.

Everything is included for a very quick and easy installation that won’t require any additional tools. Typically, you can expect to install the entire thing within ten minutes or so.

Additionally, the hose provided is the standard five feet and chrome color. However, many people have reported that their hose began leaking months after purchase. Though this doesn’t happen with everyone, the cost of a new hose may be something to consider in the purchase price of this shower head.

Regardless, even with the potential for having to replace the hose down the line, the cost of this handheld shower head makes it a perfectly valid option for those on a really tight budget.

  • Extremely cheap for a handheld shower head
  • Lots of spray options, and other settings to customize your shower experience
  • Easy installation with no tools required

  • May potentially spring leaks, leading to the hose needing to be replaced periodically
  • Made from low grade plastic, which may degrade over time

Magnetic Handheld Option: Moen 26112SRN Engage Handheld Shower Head

The fifth and final entry on this list is the Moen 26112SRN. Moen is another one of those companies that has been in the industry for a really long time. Started in 1937, Moen has since made hundreds of different faucet and shower head models through the past century.

The main appeal of Moen’s S6112SRN compared to other handheld shower heads out there is definitely in the magnet on the shower head’s back plate. Whereas the majority of shower heads out there require a holder that you must place the shower head directly into, the Moen can simple be pressed back into place. This is overall pretty convenient if you’re someone who constantly misses the holder, or finds themselves annoyed with constantly placing the shower head back in place.

Aside from the magnetism, the Moen S6112SRN comes with a plethora of fairly standard features like its competitors. It has six separate spray functions which makes it perfect for those with pets, children, or elderly family members. A five foot hose is included with the shower head as well.

On the bad side, however, is the plastic connector to your water supply. Though it’s not uncommon for many of the cheaper brands to use plastic to connect to your shower pipes, the Moen uses a fairly cheap plastic that does tend to break and snap off for some people. It doesn’t occur regularly enough for the majority to be considered a critical issue, but it’s still worth the consideration.

Overall, the magnetism is nice, but I personally feel that having a shower head that will last is an important aspect to me. However, if you absolutely want a magnetic handheld shower head, then the Moen is one of the best options for you currently available.

What You Should Consider Before Choosing Your Handheld Shower Head

Qualities and Features to Consider Before Purchase

Here are some qualities and features that you may want to think about before you choose what handheld shower head is right for you.

  • Gallons per Minute (GPM): Gallons per minute dictate how much you’ll be spending on water over time. Additionally, in the state of California, you must use a shower head under 1.8GPM per state law.
  • Budget: Depending on your budget, the amount of features and overall quality of your shower can be greatly affected. We’ve tried to include some options of a variety of income levels so you can have a similar quality shower regardless of your budget.
  • Durability: The above shower heads vary greatly in how long they’ll last. A shower head such as High Sierra typically has both a limited lifetime warranty and short term money back guarantee, but lower cost ones do not. Whether you intend to replace your shower head semi-frequently or not can mean the difference between purchasing a higher quality handheld shower head, or understanding that you’ll be purchasing and installing a lot more over time.
  • Hose Length: If you have a larger shower, you’ll likely either want to purchase an aftermarket hose or go with a shower head that includes a larger hose from the beginning.
  • Color: This is purely from an aesthetics point of view, but some people will want to consider what color their handheld shower head is and whether it matches the rest of their bathroom. The weight you place on this decision varies depending on the person and what they’re looking to achieve.
  • Water Spray Sensitivity: Some of the above handheld shower heads include several spray settings, and others provide a singular spray setting unlike any other. Depending on individual sensitivities, those susceptible to not enjoying high pressure may want to consider purchasing a handheld shower head with more spray settings. Otherwise, you may be taking a risk of not enjoying the single spray setting of other shower heads.

Frequently Asked Questions About Handheld Shower Heads

What are Handheld Shower Heads?

Handheld shower heads are shower heads that can be removed from a “base” holder near your shower’s main pipe and water flow. Water flows through a large, typically five foot hose, and allows you to move the shower head freely.

They can be held by hand and used to target any part of your body for a more involved shower experience.

Are Handheld Shower Heads Interchangeable?

Typically, the majority of handheld shower heads are interchangeable to some extent. This varies depending on the installed shower arm from your main water flow pipe, the hose you currently have, and any other additional valves.

If you have had a handheld shower head installed previously, you likely won’t have too much trouble switching to another shower head, but it may require additional purchases depending on the new build.

How Can I Change from a Normal Shower Head to A Handheld Shower Head?

This is surprisingly easier than you may think. For the majority of people who have a simple shower head currently installed, all you’ll have to do is likely unscrew the current shower head. Then, check the tape on the shower arm and see if there are any rips and tears. Replace the tape as necessary, and then screw on the new handheld shower head holder, combined with the hose and handheld unit.

Unless you are installing multiple shower head faces, most installations will take less than twenty minutes of your time.

Picking the Best Handheld Shower Head for You

Still confused? If you need any additional help in choosing what handheld shower head is right for you, then here are the main points of each of the above shower heads summarized for you:

  • If you want a handheld shower head that is durable, cheap, and will just get the job done:

    High Sierra
  • If you want a hybrid rainfall and stream handheld shower head that covers the largest amount of area:
  • If you’re on a super tight budget and don’t mind potentially replacing a hose down the line:
  • If you can’t stand normal handheld holders and need a magnetized handheld shower head instead:
